This photo, which allegedly shows two of the men who attacked Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, is being circulated online by jihadist networks. It is the first photo to allegedly show a clear view of the attackers. Somalia-based militan group Al Shabab, which is linked to al Qaeda, has taken responsibility for the attack. The floor tiles in this image clearly match those of Westgate shopping mall, captured in photos by numerous photographers, including this one from the Times of London:
The photo was first spotted Monday on Twitter accounts purporting to be run by al Shabab militants who call themselves “media soldiers”, which have popped up, been shut down, and reopened under new names numerous times since the start of the siege. This makes it impossible to track the first instance in which the image was posted. The photo has been accompanied by the description “A gift to Muslims: a rare photo of our heroes during the operation.” It has also been relayed by well-known supporters of international jihad, such as Twitter user @al_khansaa2. Given the angle of the shot, it looks likely to have been taken by a security camera. It could also be a photo or a screen grab of an image displayed on one of the mall’s security camera monitors. On Tuesday morning, the latest Twitter account claiming to represent al Shabab posted a version of the photo surrounded by the interface of LILIN, a popular CCTV software provider.

At least 30 people were killed in an earthquake measuring 7.8 which struck southwest Pakistan. Tremors were felt across the region and as far as New Delhi. The US Geological Survey has measured the quake at 7.8 magnitude. The quake struck in Balochistan, just 69 km north-northeast of Awaran, the nearest city. A “RED” alert has been issued by the agency. The daily says houses have been damaged across the province while the injured are in the process of being escorted to nearby hospitals. This is yet to be officially confirmed. The earthquake hit a remote area of the country at a depth of just 15km 9.3mi, but was felt as far away as neighboring India. Pakistan’s Geo TV says the earthquake which stroke at 4:29 pm local time lasted for about two minutes.Pakistani Met office officials say that major damage and loss of life has been averted because of the earthquake’s location in such a remote area. However, they have also forecast impending aftershocks of up to 5 in magnitude on the Richter scale.
In India’s New Delhi, buildings shook sending people running into the streets, Reuters witnesses said. However, there are 337,980 people within 100km of the epicenter who could potentially be affected, according to the Global Disaster Alert and coordination System GDACS. In April this year a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Iran-Pakistan border killing 46 people and injuring some 180 others. British fugitive Samantha Lewthwaite, whose husband blew himself up in London’s 2005 terrorist attack, may be responsible for Nairobi shopping center terror and may have been gunned down by authorities, according to reports. The mother-of-three also trained female jihadists in Somalia, reports say.
A British mother who has been dubbed the “White Widow” and is wanted for plotting terrorist attacks, is the subject of growing speculation that she was involved in the mall massacre in Kenya.
Samantha Lewthwaite, 29, has been on the run for eight years, since her husband, Germaine Lindsay, blew himself up in the July 2005 suicide bombings in London that targeted subway riders.Survivors of the Westgate Mall in Nairobi said a white woman wearing a veil was among the hostage-takers. Media reports, mostly from Britain, are fueling conjecture that Lewthwaite was the white woman killed in the Nairobi attack.

NAIROBI, Kenya – Sporadic gunfire rang out early Tuesday from inside a Nairobi mall as Kenyan security forces battled al-Qaida-linked terrorists into a fourth day in what they said was a final push to rescue the last few hostages in a siege that has left more than 60 people dead.Despite Kenyan government assurances of success, an explosion and gunfire could be heard coming from the mall at around 6:30 a.m., followed by the sustained chatter of automatic weapons for about a minute almost three hours later, according to Associated Press reporters at the scene.Security forces carried a body out of the mall, which remained on fire, with flames and smoke visible.
