Turkish police use water cannon against pro-Kurd protesters in Diyarbakir

Riot police use water cannons to disperse demonstrators, Diyarbakir, Turkey.

Police have deployed tear gas and water cannon against several thousand protesters gathered in the streets of the Turkish city of Diyarbakir to condemn security operations against Kurdish militants, Reuters reports. T

he massive protest in Turkey’s southeast coincided with a conference at which Selahattin Demirtas, the co-leader of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), urged public “resistance” against the operations.

Diyarbakir Province is a stronghold of the Turkish Kurds. The city of Diyarbakir has been repeatedly flooded by anti-government protests. The latest was held on Monday, when people rallied against round-the-clock curfews being imposed in the region. At least seven Kurds were killed following clashes with Turkish security forces.

Dozens of Kurds have been killed in recent months following clashes with police in the province. Earlier, the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey reported of a total of 52 curfews imposed since mid-August across seven provinces in the region, affecting areas where some 1.3 million people live.On Thursday, reports emerged that the Turkish Army had sent military vehicles, including tanks, into civilian areas in its predominantly-Kurdish southeast. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has been publishing photos of what it says is a fresh raid by the Turkish Army ever since the incursion began.

US military in Syria violate sovereignty, not fighting terror – Damascus

The actions of the US military in Syria are a violation of the latter’s sovereignty and not part of any anti-terrorist action, Syria’s deputy foreign minister says.

We doubt that they [US troops] are sincere in their fight against terrorism. They do not coordinate their actions with the Syrian Army. This makes those forces illegal in Syria’s territory. One cannot say they are fighting terrorism,” Faisal al-Mikdad, Syria’s deputy foreign minister, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Fighting terrorism must be a practical task, not this advertising gig that the West is engaged in,” he added.

The diplomat spoke after Washington confirmed the deployment of special operations troops in Syria. US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter called on Thursday the first commando mission in Syria a success.

I think the point is that it bore the fruit that we hoped it would,” Carter told reporters after meeting with troops, commanders and Kurdish leaders in Irbil, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdish Autonomy.

Mikdad blasted Saudi Arabia for hosting a meeting of various forces seeking to oust the government in Damascus.

Some of the participants that Saudi Arabia allowed to the conference are not really opposition. Others represented terrorist groups. We can only say that Syria does not negotiate with terrorists. The only place we meet them is the battlefield,” he said.

He also dismissed the hyped-up Riyadh-led military anti-terrorism coalition of 34 nations, which Saudi Arabia revealed this week. Mikdad said the proposed alliance was sectarian in nature and used religious slogans for political goals much like the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) does. The Saudi alliance had a somewhat bumpy start as several nations listed as its members claimed they had learned about their participation from the media.

Mikdad said the Syrian Army may join forces with some groups of the so-called Free Syrian Army, an umbrella organization backed by Western powers that supposedly includes moderate rebel forces.

If all the guns are pointed at one enemy, that is terrorism, we would welcome it. Or they may drop their weapons and go back to peaceful life or enlist into the army,” Mikdad said, adding that rebels wishing to do so must stop partaking in crimes like killings of civilians, kidnappings and pillaging of cities under their control.

The Syrian official said the impact of Russia’s anti-terrorist campaign in Syria is already visible across the country.

The biggest achievement is the weakening of Daesh [an Arabic abbreviation for Islamic State, previously ISIS/ISIL] and other terrorist groups,” Mikdad said.

Russian airstrikes have degraded the terrorists, as proven by the recapturing of territories in Hama, Latakia, Idlib and Aleppo provinces. Those are significant successes and they will become apparent even more soon,” he said.

Libya unity deal could see British troops deployed to fight ISIS

Libya’s two opposing governments have agreed to a UN-brokered unity deal, but the hard-won parlay could see UK troops deployed to the battle-scarred North African state to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The UK expects to be asked to send troops, with some suggestions up to 1,000 could be deployed as well as a small number of Special Forces.

Their main roles would be to train local forces to oppose IS, which has gained a foothold in Libya since the Western-led intervention in 2011, and to help in operations against people traffickers.

We have always been clear we would look to support a unity government if one were to be formed, and if one is formed we would obviously need to wait for any requests that they put to us before we would then make a decision,” a Downing Street spokesman told the Daily Mail newspaper on Thursday.

We have always certainly been clear that if any troops were ever deployed on the back of a request from that government, that they certainly would not be in a combat role,” he added.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who committed British fighter jets to the campaign to overthrow Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, aired his approval of the deal between the rival governments struck in Tripoli and Tobruk.

Importantly, this agreement means the international community can now engage with one unified, representative government in Libya in the fight against Daesh [IS] and the migrant traffickers,” he said on Thursday.

In a speech after the deal was struck, UN Libya envoy Martin Kobler said: “The signing of the Libyan political agreement is the first step on the path of building a democratic Libyan state based on the principles of human rights and the rule of law.

Western Special Forces have not been well received in Libya recently. A group of US commandos was recently ejected shortly after arriving, according to reports.

According to a statement by the Libyan air force, the soldiers, who were heavily armed but in civilian clothes, landed at Wattayah airbase near Tripoli at 06:00 GMT on Monday.

A Pentagon statement on Friday confirmed that the soldiers had been chased out by local militias who did not approve of their presence.

With the concurrence of Libyan officials, US military personnel traveled to Libya on 14 December to engage in a dialogue with ‎representatives of the Libyan National Army.

While in Libya, members of a local militia demanded that the US personnel depart. In an effort to avoid conflict, they did leave, without incident,” the Pentagon added.

Germany Set to Cooperate With Assad, Set Up Intel Agency in Damascus

In a dramatic move, Germany is set to become the first western nation and NATO member to break ranks and begin cooperating with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and set up an intelligence agency branch in Damascus.

Although there has been no official announcement, anonymous sources quoted in the German Bild newspaper, confirmed that the federal government is keen to establish a branch of its Federal Intelligence Service (BND) in Damascus in an effort to counter Daesh, also known as ISIL.

The source said a decision on the move to renew ties with the Syrian intelligence agencies could be made as early as 2016 and may even involve reopening the German embassy in Damascus, which was closed in February 2012, when the German ambassador was withdrawn. The BND is reported to be anxious to quickly set up as a so-called Residentur in the Syrian capital, with a view to permanently stationing staff there.

There has been a long history of intelligence-sharing between Berlin and Damascus, which Germany believes is an important partner in the fight against radical Islamists. Diplomatic relations were broken off in 2012 when, the then Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle expelled the Syrian ambassador from Germany. The German ambassador to Damascus was withdrawn and the embassy closed for safety reasons.

High Alert

Germany has been put on high terror alert this years, following both the Charlie Hebdo attacks in January and the November 13 Paris attacks, which killed 130 people and injured hundreds more. The latter attack had links with Germany and one man was arrested in Stuttgart for allegedly supplying weapons to the Paris attackers.

The threat from Daesh is now being taken very seriously by Germany, which recently voted in parliament to begin support operations with its coalition partners against Daesh in Syria and Iraq. Police arrested three Islamists believed to have planned an attack in Dortmund, and a fourth man, in Stuttgart, believed to have supplied weapons to the jihadists who carried out the Paris attacks. The threat of terror was further brought home in September 2015 when a 41-year-old self-proclaimed Islamist was shot dead in Berlin after he severely stabbed and injured a policewoman in an incident on a public street in Berlin.

Meanwhile, security officials in Germany are interrogating a man — known only as “Harry S”, a 27-year-old from Bremen — who returned from Syria where he took part in the execution by Daesh militants of six or seven prisoners. He told the officials that Daesh were recruiting Germans, training them and calling on them to carry out terrorist attacks against Germany.

Black box of downed Russian Su-24M jet damaged

The black box of Russia’s Su-24M jet downed over Syria is damaged, and deciphering will be held with help of special equipment, Deputy Commander of Russian Aerospace Defense Forces Sergey Dronov told journalists on Friday.

“Considering the fact that the box is damaged, deciphering flight data will be held with use of special equipment. Until now no work has been done with the black box. It is in the same condition as it was found at the crash site,” Dronov said.

According to Dronov, specialists from China and Great Britain have agreed to take part in the investigation of the death of the Su-24M pilot.

“In order to ensure maximal transparency and openness, we addressed foreign experts from 14 countries with an invitation to take part in the work [investigation] as observers. However, many specialists refused to participate in the investigation citing various reasons, excluding only Mr Liu Chang Wei from China and Mr Jonathan Gillespie from the United Kingdom,” Dronov said.

US citizens will also take part in the investigation of the incident.

“The president and vice president of the international society of investigating air accidents, US citizens Del Gandio and Ron Schleed, are taking part in this effort,” Dronov said.

The Russian side is represented by Oleg Kalida, the head of flights safety service of Moscow’s helicopter plant and a veteran pilot who took part in combat operations of Su-24 jet.

Head of the informational and analytical department of the Defense Ministry flight safety service Andrey Semenov said the black box of the downed bomber may have been damaged by the missile that downed it.

“The flight recorder is stationed in the tail section [of the plane], near keels,” Semenov said commenting on the process of opening the black box and removing the memory module.

“The tail section has most likely been affected by a missile in addition to the impact of collision with the ground,” he added.

According to Semenov, the memory unit removed from the black box was damaged.

“It was decided to carry out an X-ray inspection which will allow to establish damages of each of 16 chipsets,” Semenov said adding that the procedure will be carried out in a laboratory.

“On the top plate of eight shipsets, there are obvious damages with scraps which most likely means that there is no flight data there,” he added.

The deputy head of flights safety service of Russia’s Armed Forces has said the analysis of flight data recorder of the Russian bomber will begin on Saturday.

“Tomorrow, on December 19, an analysis and processing of the flight data will be carried out,” Sergey Baynetov said, adding that the results will be unveiled on Monday.

The results will be presented on December 21.
