Egypt: Brotherhood, Hamas ‘plot to attack churches’

hamas

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) – The Egyptian intelligence said Wednesday that groups affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas movement plotted to blow up Coptic churches in the North Sinai district during Christmas celebrations on Jan. 7.

Egypt’s al-Watan newspaper reported that Egyptian intelligence intercepted communications between “terrorist groups” in Sinai and activists of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.

The Sinai groups, according to the report, were given directives to continue with “what they called Jihad” against Egyptian police and army, according to the report.

They were also told to expect weapons and funds in a few days through smuggling tunnels from the Gaza Strip “via three members of the Hamas military wing,” the newspaper report alleged.

The report highlighted that Egyptian security arrested a member of a “terrorist” group in Sinai and he had ciphered letters from which Egyptian experts learned that explosives and 700,000 Egyptian pounds would be sent to the militant groups in Sinai.

The ciphers, according to al-Watan, instructed the “terrorists” to carry out several attacks against churches simultaneously during Christmas celebrations.

Late on Wednesday, Erdogan announced a major cabinet reshuffle, replacing 10 key ministers. This came soon after the resignation of interior, economy, and environment ministers over a high profile corruption investigation. Resigned Environment Minister Erdogan Bayraktar turned against the Turkish leader, urging him to step down.

The scandal and ensuing feud between Erdogan and the judiciary have reignited anti-government protests against Erdogan’s 11-year rule within the past week.

The protesters rallying in Istanbul have shouted slogans such as “Three ministers’ resignation is not enough, the whole government should resign,” as well as ” corruption is everywhere” and “resistance is everywhere,” Xinhua reported.

More than 10 political parties and organizations have called for the protest.

The graft scandal poses an unprecedented challenge to his 11-year rule, which survived a massive anti-government demonstration that swept the nation in mid-2013.

Dozens of people have been arrested in the ongoing corruption investigation, including the head of state-run Halkbank. The government responded by purging police investigators describing the probe as a “dirty game.” Erdogan claimed it was a plot by foreign and other anti-government forces ahead of the March local elections.

According to Hurriyet newspaper, up to 550 police officers – including senior commanders – have been dismissed nationwide in the past week by now former Interior Minister Muammer Guler.

The Tawhid Brigade has also confirmed the death.

Another militant commander, Youssef al-Abbas, known as Abu al-Tayyeb, was also killed during the airstrike on November 14.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday that four other militant commanders were also killed in separate incidents in Aleppo and the central province of Homs.

A defected army colonel who commanded another militant brigade was killed in clashes in the Maaret al-Artiq area of Aleppo.

In recent weeks, the Syrian army has made major advances in its fight against the foreign-backed militant groups.

On November 16, the army kept up its operations against militant positions in Harasta, the northeastern suburb of Damascus. The Syrian troops also recaptured positions in the town of Tel Hasel on the outskirts of the city of Aleppo.

Syrian soldiers also managed to regain control of the towns of Hawarin and Mahin in the eastern countryside of Homs Province.

Nearly three years of crisis in Syria has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people, according to statistics compiled by the United Nations. Millions of people have also been displaced due to the turmoil.
